The Chivas Brothers company was founded in 1801 by two brothers, John and James Chivas. They got their family name from the Schivas Mansion in Aberdeenshire, built in 1640. The name comes from the Gaelic “seamhas”, which means “narrow place”.
The Chivas Brothers store sold many delicacies from around the world: expensive coffees, spices, cognac, rum from the Caribbean region and others. However, they could not find a whiskey in Scotland that would meet the standards of their store. Then, in 1801, the brothers created their own high-quality whiskey. The rich people of Scotland quickly fell in love with the new whiskey, and soon those close to the English royal family.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Chivas brothers decided to produce high-aged whiskey for export to the USA, where there was a great demand for luxury goods in the conditions of rapid economic development. This type of whiskey was named Chivas Regal 25 and was the leading brand of Scotch whiskey on the American market until the Prohibition began in 1920. After Prohibition was repealed, Chivas returned to the American market as Chivas Regal 12. It became the style drink of the era, thanks in large part to its promotion as Frank Sinatra’s favorite whiskey.
In 1997, Chivas Regal blend master Colin Scott created eighteen-year-old whiskey. In 2000, Pernord Ricard acquired Chivas Regal.
