Whiskey – how and with what to drink

Whiskey, scotch, bourbon are all names for the same drink. And yet, it is called “holy water” or “living water”. Such a phrase is explained from the point of view of linguistics. The now familiar English version of “whiskey” comes from the Gaelic “uisge beatha”. In turn, the Gaels or “Scottish highlanders” borrowed it from Latin. It sounds like “aqua vitae”, which means “water of life”.

The main components in the production of strong alcoholic beverages are cereals. As a rule, barley, wheat, rye, and corn are used. As a result of passing through multiple processes, in particular malting, fermentation, distillation, and then aging in special barrels, selected raw materials turn into a product revered by many.

The founding fathers

Each “self-respecting drink” has its own pedigree. Whiskey is no exception. Even vice versa. For the right to be called its ancestors, there are two whole peoples – the Irish and the Scots. Until now, historians are turning over old archives in search of ancient evidence in the question: “Who is the first?”

In Ireland, documented references to the creation of an amazing elixir with unique healing properties were found in chronicles dated 1405. It was produced in those distant times in monasteries. Legends and legends of the Irish send us in general to the XI century and connect the origin of whiskey with St. Patrick, who is considered the patron saint of their people.

The Scots “pull the blanket over themselves” and, as evidence, present an entry in the treasury register dated June 1, 1494. It indicates the issuance of malt for the manufacture of “water of life” to a certain brother J. Cor.

To choose one or another version is the right of everyone. In any case, modern producers of both countries supply the market with excellent drinks that have received worldwide recognition. They can rightly be called the “trendsetters” of this line of alcoholic products.

Scottish traditions

For more than 500 years of its existence, whiskey managed to gain not only popularity. In relation to this elite alcohol, certain traditions have appeared. Especially in matters of how and with what to drink it. The Scottish canons are perhaps one of the most ancient. Here they prefer to drink a drink that is considered almost a national treasure, enjoying not only it, but also the process itself.

Whiskey should be served chilled to 18-20 degrees. A higher temperature promotes the taste of alcohol. And the low one does not allow the magnificent bouquet of aromas inherent in it to open up.

It is customary to pour into pre-prepared containers. They can be glasses with a thick bottom, that is, highballs, tumblers, rocks, or special tin mugs – kveichi. Tulip-shaped glasses are also suitable. It is believed that they also perfectly convey the whole flavor of the smells and tastes of this incredible potion.

How and with what

There is also a specific drinking ritual called the Rule of five P’s (in russian). And so, the first thing to do after the containers are filled (necessarily, only a third) is to admire the color.

The next step is to smell the whiskey, to feel its smell, slowly rotating the amber liquid in the glass. Then – “tasting”, sipping a little and, as it were, “chewing” in the mouth. The fourth step is to swallow and taste. To do this, drink half or most of the drink in small sips.

The fifth and final step is to add or “splash” the remaining amount of the purest spring water. This allows you to further reveal all the extraordinary qualities of “liquid gold”, as this exquisite alcohol is sometimes called.

Whiskey is not accepted to eat. But some experts believe that the right food will not interfere with a pleasant feast. Several meat options are allowed. Grilled beef or tongue, lamb, foie gras will do. Seafood, smoked fish, and salmon are well combined. Also – bitter chocolate and melon.
