Absinthe is one of the most mysterious alcoholic drinks

There are many drinks that have an interesting, and sometimes even mysterious history. One of them is a potion with the original name – absinthe.

It belongs to the category of strong alcoholic products, in which the alcohol content reaches, at times, 89.9%. For a long time, thujone was considered the main active ingredient in it. This substance was attributed to special hallucinogenic properties.

Rich composition

Initially, the created remedy belonged to the group of medicinal potions. It included many ingredients. The magnificent bouquet consisted of medicinal herbs, such as the most useful chamomile, mint, and lemon balm.

There were also the most wonderful sources of vitamins – fennel, calamus, as well as anise and parsley, which strengthen the immune system and promote recuperation. The composition was supplemented by coriander, hyssop, licorice, and others with healing properties of the plant.

But the main component was, nevertheless, the flowers and leaves of wormwood. During infusion, this unique herb gave away all the useful substances, including thujone, which belongs to the category of narcotic.

History of creation and distribution

There are several versions of the origin of the magic elixir. Someone attributes these merits to the Enrio sisters. They lived in those ancient times in Switzerland and earned their living by creating drugs. In 1792, thanks to their efforts, wormwood-anise tincture was born, which is considered the prototype of absinthe.

Other sources give the lead to Dr. Ordiner. He prescribed a kind of original drug to his patients. And those, recovering from many diseases, were simply delighted with him

Be that as it may, several decades later, an extraordinary drink ends up in the first-aid kit provided to the brave soldiers of the French army. In the middle of the XIX century, France took part in the colonial wars. Just then, the drug began to be prescribed to soldiers as a medicine.

The military returned home with a new addiction. It took quite a bit of time and the popularity of the unique tincture swept the whole country.

Ban

“Dry” numbers can tell a lot. If in 1874 the consumption of absinthe was indicated in the amount of 700,000 liters, then already in 1910 it reached 36,000,000 liters.

The drink practically replaced other alcoholic products, including cognac, wine, which were in France, in a certain way, its hallmark. According to some historians, the craze for the “Green Fairy” led to the development of mass alcoholism among different segments of the population.

Serious crimes began to be associated with the mysterious tincture. Often, horrifying news made it to the pages of the newspapers. One of these stories told of a certain Jean Lanfra. He was considered a famous Swiss manufacturer of this product and, allegedly, being under the influence of absinthe, he killed his family.

The horrific event shocked the public. A petition flew to the authorities with an urgent request to ban this alcoholic product in Switzerland. More than 80,000 people signed it, and in 1908 the ban was imposed.

In 1912, the United States joined this “project”, and in 1915 France. Many other states, in particular Germany, Belgium, Italy, “expelled” absinthe from their territory.

Moreover, a harsh alcoholic product began to be called a drug. But it was not easy for her admirers to refuse the “green fairy”. And the drink took a semi-legal position. It began to be produced under the guise of various substitutes, for example, aniseed vodka or wormwood leaves soaked in vodka, etc.

Return

The “new era” for the amazing potion began only at the end of the last century. And some countries lifted the ban just recently. Switzerland, for example, took such a step only in 2004 and the United States later. The first legal batch of this “mystical” drug was released there in 2007.

Our company also decided to revive the former glory of the most popular drink, covered with secrets and legends. Based on a classic recipe using pure, natural ingredients, Vincent absinthe is Brandbar’s luxury product.

Having tried this magnificent product, everyone can touch the spirit of the mysterious past.

The fate of many famous people who are addicted to strong drink is another confirmation of this. But that’s a completely different story.
